Research & Development

Before any flight hardware is developed, the processes involved must be properly characterised. In other words, a preliminary set of ALISSE criteria has to be established: mass, efficiency, energy, safety and basic mathematical modelling. This phase is often carried out in the academic and engineering world, with the support of the space industry.

Waste Treatment

The C1 compartment: thermophilic anaerobic digestion that breaks down crew waste.

Nitrification

The C3 compartment: converting ammonium into nitrate that plants and the crew compartment can use.

Photobioreactor

Cultivating photosynthetic organisms to regenerate oxygen and produce biomass.

Higher Plant Characterization

Growing and characterising food crops within a closed-loop system.

Food Preparation

Turning what the loop produces into food the crew can actually eat.

Modelling & Control

The models and control strategies that keep the whole loop stable and predictable.
