The European Space Agency (ESA) is a founding member of the MELiSSA consortium and has run the programme since 1987 as part of its life support and space engineering research. ESA coordinates the consortium’s network of universities, research institutes and industrial partners, and funds the doctoral and flight-experiment work carried out under the MELiSSA name.
